Remember when Blake Lively wore all those suits? Notice how pretty much all of Graham Norton’s guests also wear suits? Suits are back in a huge way this year. (Luckily for us.) But you can’t always drag out your wardrobe staple; there are new styles in town! Let’s take a look at what’s ‘in’ in suiting and other top UK trends for 2019.
Men: pull out the elegant suits
In London, Milan, and Paris, tailoring was a big trend. The usual designers such as Canali, Corneliani, and Ermenegildo Zegna showcased beautiful suits as well as some usual brands who don’t usually dabble in tailoring such as Comme des Garcons, Charles Jeffrey Loverboy, Virgil Abloh for Louis Vuitton, and Kim Jones for Dior. The double-breasted blazer, especially, made its big comeback.
However, a more surprising trend was not that tailoring was a hit but that many collections (Zegna, Hermes, and others) opted for the bare chest look, i.e. a suit without a shirt. Yes, it’s a thing, but it’s up to you if you choose to rock the look.

Gone are the days of board and cargo shorts! Whilst women’s shorts are getting longer and comfier, men’s shorts are getting shorter—but no less comfy, one would hope. Prada, Louis Vuitton, and Dries Van Noten pioneered the look this season.

In the US, neon is in as is brown, but in the UK it appears sage is the colour of the season. Canali, Corneliani, and Dsquared2 came out with the colour trend this season.

Lavender was last year’s colour for women, but now powder blue is the colour of choice. Designers showcasing this colour were Alice + Olivia, Marc Jacobs, Givenchy, and Roland Mouret. Expect to see more of this colour this season, especially in ruched fabrics (another trend).

Would you wear your polka dots with stripes? In the past, perhaps not, but clashing prints are now in hot demand. Dolce & Gabbana and Versace showcased bold colours and prints as did Diane von Furstenberg, Self-Portrait, Balenciaga, Michael Kors, Carolina Herrera, Preen, Cavalli, and others.

On the runway and the red carpet, women have opted for suits instead of ball gowns, but will it trickle into street style for evening wear? A trend for spring 2019 is the pink tuxedo/pink suit. Tailored looks were all the rage on popular catwalks. Designers such as Gabriella Hearts, Boss, Escada, Sies Marjan, Armani, Balenciaga, Roksanda, Peter Pilotto, and others pioneered these looks this season.
