The third of the big four fashion weeks, Milan Fashion Week, ran from Tuesday, 17 September to Monday, 23 September. The four fashion weeks begin with New York and end with Paris, which concluded last week. Milan fashion week did not disappoint; lots of big things happened, including Jennifer Lopez’s emergence on the runway in a reworking of her famous Versace dress. Let’s take a look at the women’s fashion in Milan Fashion Week’s Spring/Summer 2020 collection.

Jennifer Lopez

In the year 2000, when Jennifer Lopez was in her early 30s, she wore an exotic and now iconic Versace green silk chiffon dress to the 42nd Grammy Awards with a daring plunging neckline and strategically placed jewels. She was accompanied on the red carpet with her then-boyfriend Sean Combs (P. Diddy). The dress caused a stir and was downloaded from the Grammy’s website over 600,000 times. ‘The dress’ went on to prompt Google’s Eric Schmidt years later to develop Google images.

Fast forward to the end of last month, Jennifer Lopez, looking amazing at age 50, stepped out in a recreation of the 2000s dress with Donatella Versace, which caused another media stir and great applause!

Irina Shayk

Russian model Irina Shayk walked the Versace, Max Mara, and Moschino runways. The daring pink and red Versace chainmail dress and matching hoop earrings and shoes garnered plenty of attention. In the Moschino runway, the Picasso-themed/fantasy yellow musical instrument-inspired outfit looked striking on the light-eyed beauty.

Gigi Hadid

Dutch/Palestinian American model Gigi Hadid who is a former Victoria’s Secret runway model appeared in many high-fashion runways this season including Fendi, Prada, Max Mara, and Moschino.

The Prada and Fendi runways had Autumn colour neutrals in browns, blacks, and pops of colour. Max Mara’s looks on Gigi were mostly in shades of grey and silver. Moschino had ‘showstopping’ looks, putting Gigi in a birdlike wedding dress and a hand-painted suit in white, yellow, and blue.

Bella Hadid

Gigi’s younger sister, Bella, made her NYFW debut in the fall of 2014 and has been modelling for over five years. Despite having a relatively short career, she is popular on the runway. She walked in the Fendi, Moschino, Etro, Max Mara, Alberta Ferretti, Philosophy Di Lorenzo Serafini, Salvatore Ferragamo, and the Versace runways this year.

Her looks were varied from sleek silk gowns to business-like attire to casual corduroy to a clown-like jumpsuit at Moschino. Some beautiful and off-the-wall looks were showcased in Milan.

Kaia Gerber

The daughter of the supermodel Cindy Crawford and Randy Gerber (think Gerber baby food fortune) started her modelling career for the Versace junior line at the age of ten and she hasn’t looked back. This season she was seen on the runways of Moschino, Prada, Versace, and Alberta Ferretti.

The takeaways

The looks in Milan this season were elegant, daring, colourful, and neutral, wrapped into one. We have seen some exciting developments in fashion this season. It’s good to note that women’s tailoring is still on-trend, but there does seem to be a shift towards more ‘traditionally feminine’ gowns.
