Fashion just got a comfort and colour overhaul! While the New Yorkers, Bostonians, Washingtonians, and the like love their tailored dark suits year-round, those in LA, San Diego, San Francisco, Portland, and the like prefer more relaxed looks—chinos, jeans, t-shirts, and light button-ups in cool fabrics and lighter colours. But no matter the East Coast/West Coast debate, what fashions are cropping up on the runways as upcoming men’s and women’s American trends for 2019? The answer is that things just got a whole lot more casual.

Men: relaxed cut trousers

Closet your skinny jeans (for now). We are sure they’ll come back! But good news for those men who loved the 90s loose pant styles (the room in the trousers may have been a little much, no?) in that relaxed cuts are back in. We saw relaxed fits during New York Fashion week and now we are seeing them on the high street and high-end department store rails. This look goes well with pleated pants, tailored looks, chinos, anything.

Men: textured fabrics

Velvet has been a huge trend so far this year for suits along with other textured fabrics like corduroy, boiled wool, fleece, moleskin, hairy suede, and shearling. It’s all about mixing textures and fabrics. It’s worth investing in high-quality pieces as this fabric trend appears to stay. Gone are the suits solely made of high-quality wool; you can now choose other fabrics too.

Men: impeccable tailoring with a twist

So, let’s take a classic navy suit—a total wardrobe staple for men—but maybe not the most unique suit statement one can make. Tailoring just got a lot more ‘exciting’ on the runway with a technicolour makeover. Menswear is definitely pushing the boundaries on the runway and in American street style. Wild and crazy patterns are in as well as alternative shirting. Gone is the classic button up and in with the t-shirt, a vest, a jumper—anything goes. That means footwear too. Want to wear trainers with your tailoring? Go for it. Want to wear neon and patterns? That’s fine too. For the average guy, this means that you can play with colour, texture, waistcoats, undershirts, footwear, anything to customise and stylise your look. Not everyone will be brave enough to pull off runway looks, but now’s the time to experiment.

Men: shades of brown

This brown trend goes for women too. Brown is in. There’s a reason the classic camel coat has been a staple for years! Bring out those outfits from the 70s because they are now back in. You can wear any shade of brown imaginable—rust, dirt, camel, sand, and anything in between—in any type of clothing: coats, jackets, suits, shirts, knitwear, t-shirts, shoes. Go monochrome if you like!

Women: oversized hats

Last year, Instagram was alive with Jacquemus La Bomba hats. These floppy, large hats have started a trend. So, it’s now fashionable to stay out of the sun and lounge around with a large hat like you’re in a 1940s classic film. Don’t go to the beach without one.

Women: sensible shorts

No short-shorts this summer and the cycling shorts that were on trend last year are out, too. Next short season, just like men’s trousers, things are loosening up. Look for women’s tailored, micro, knee-length, and boyish shorts.

Women: embellished flats

Valentino and Simone Rocha removed the stilettos from their runway (unlike Halpern, Ashish, and David Koma) and brought their model’s feet to the ground. So, now with your comfy shorts, you can rock some comfy, yet fancy flats. The more embellished the better.

Women: neon colour palette

Last fashion week, we saw some jazzed up colours, but now it’s gone full neon. Break out your club clothes for the daytime, people. Pastels are out and the brightest of bright hues are in—think lime greens, electric blues, neon yellows, highlighter oranges, and bright pinks.
